| St Gallen Overview |
The relaxed and slightly conservative town of st Gallen is the main urban centre of eastern Switzeland. The town is beautifuly set amongst the rolling countryside and flanked by the Bodensee in the north and the Appenzell hills in the south.
St Gallen has a stunning old town with its centerpiece being the lavish Baroque abbey but the modern cenre is also interesting with vibrant shops and restaurants. |

St Gallen Cathedral - the huge, elaborate Baroque cathedral is an unmissable sight in St Gallen. See the east façade that overlooks the formal lawns of the abbey and the palace wing where the Bishop of St Gallen still lives. The interior features sandstone floors, light green stuccowork walls and impressive ceiling frescoes from 1757 to 1766.
Stiftsbibliothek - the awe inspiring abbey library is one of the oldest in Europe and has been delclared a UNESCO Worls Heritage Site. The dazzling Rococo interior has a collection of Irish manuscripts, 140 000 volumes focusing on the middle ages and a huge reference section, the library is also still fully operational.
Textilmuseum - located on Vadianstrasse, the museum has a well preserved and interesting collection of handmade embroidery and lace. The displays include explenations on the current decline and past growth of the industry.
St Laurenzen Kirche - located on Marktgasse, this tall steepled 9th century church was origionally situated within the abbey of the cathedral and library. Renovations in the mid 19th century in a Neo Gothic style and further renovations in the 1970's make the architecture very interesting.
Gallusstrasse - this street in St Gallen's old town is lined with lovely old buildings in a wealth of contrasting and complementing architecturial styles. View the half timbered cottages from the middle ages, Baroque townhouses and imposing villas from St Gallen's textile producing golden age. |

St Gallen Open Air Festival - held in June every year, this is one of the biggest music festivals in the country and hosts a varied mix of international musicians from the worlds of rock and pop.
Swiss Toy Fair - held in November, the fair feels like walking through santa's warehouse. Hundreds of toys and games from past and present are on display and the atmosphere is very festive. |
