| Sion Overview |
The oldest town in Switzerland, Sion is the main town in the Canton of Valais and is an important traffic junction in Switzerland with an international airport as well as good Post bus and rail connections.
The lovely old town with its castles, museums and beautiful buildings lies beneath the Tourbillon and Valere hills. Sion is also situated in the main vine growing region of Switerland and white wines from the region, particularly Fedant, are well known and loved. |
| Sion Essentials |
Old Town - there are many beautiful buildings lining the streets of the old town. Highlights include the All Saints Chapel wich was founded in 1325 but restored in 1964, St Theodule Church, Sorcerers Tower and the Gothic Notre Dame Cathedral with its Romanesque frontal tower built in the 12th century.
Cantonal Fine Arts Museum - housed in two Medieval castles, the museum features works by local and national artists from the 17th century to present day. Among the collection are Romantic, Baroque and Primitivist works by anonymous masters.
Town Hall - this building was constructed between 1657 and 1665 and features the earliest Christian sign in Switzerland dating from 377 inscribed in the entrance hall as well as magnificent panelld rooms and wonderful carved doors.
Weekly market in the old town - held on Fridays from 9am to 1pm, the market sels an array of products from cheese, meat, baked goods to wine, flowers, clothes and a variety od delicious food stalls. The market is a great place to pick up souvenirs.
Cantonal Museum of History - rated as one of the most important historical museums in Switzerland, this museum built on the hill of Valeria has a fantastic collection of popular culture objects as well as a great Medieval collection. |

Rally International of Valais - held in October every year, the rally is one of the biggest events in the area attractiong over 100 000 spectators that watch drivers steer their cars through the countryside.
Carnival of Sion - held in February every year, festivities are held around the city celebrating Sion's past, present and furure. |
